Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces indictment in attempted murder in Harper's Point.

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Edward Hopes (DOB 4/19/56) for the June 14th attempted murder of his ex-wife Kristi Lynn Stem.  Hopes is indicted on 1 count of Attempted Murder (Felony 1).  If convicted, he could face 14 years in prison.

On June 14th Hopes traveled from Pennsylvania to Ohio to kill his ex-wife.  He approached her at approximately 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot near her apartment building in Harper’s Point.  She was out for a walk when Hopes approached her armed with 2 handguns and started shooting.

Hopes fled after shooting Miss Stem and people in the area rushed to Miss Stem’s aid.  In a call to 911, Miss Stem identified her ex-husband as the shooter.

Miss Stem was struck 5 times with injuries to her cheek, jaw, hip, shoulder, arm and buttocks.  She was taken to Bethesda North Hospital where she was treated for her non-life threatening injuries.

Hopes was arrested without incident a few hours later at a hotel in Hebron, Ky.
Police obtained a search warrant for Hopes’ vehicle and located a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun, a .22 caliber semi-automatic hand gun and a 9 mm hand gun in his truck along with ammunition for all three weapons.  They also found GPS directions to Miss Stem’s apartment.

Prosecutor Deters commented, “It is a miracle that this woman is alive today.  Hopes should never be on the streets again.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department along with assistance from Kentucky police did an excellent job in this investigation in arresting the armed and dangerous Hopes within a few hours of this incident.”
