Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces rape indictment

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced an indictment against Shannon Merritt (DOB 12-23-70) on charges of Felonious Assault (Felony 2), Rape (Felony 1), Attempted Rape (Felony 2), Kidnapping (Felony 1) and Abduction (Felony 3).  If convicted of all charges, he faces in excess of 40 years in prison.

Merritt is charged with raping a relative at a residence in Bond Hill on March 2nd and 3rd.  Merritt is charged with beating the victim and causing injuries including fractures to the neck and vertebrae; bruises; lacerations to the head, face and body; and bite marks to the inner thighs and back.  The victim tried to leave the residence during the assault but the defendant forced the victim back into the residence. Eventually the victim was able to call 911 when the defendant fell asleep.

Prosecutor Deters commented, “This is an atrocity…how anyone could do this to another human being is mind boggling.  Add in the factor that the victim is his relative, and it borders on barbaric.  This defendant is now in custody.  Thanks to the Cincinnati Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Squad and the Lebanon Police Department for making this arrest.”
