Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced that no charges will be filed in connection with the January 4th traffic collision that killed Colerain Police Officer Dale Woods.

On January 4th at approximately 11:00 p.m., Woods was moving traffic cones at the scene of a crash in the 7600 block of Colerain Avenue. Woods, who was wearing a reflective vest, was struck and killed. There was no evidence that speed or impairment caused the accident.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Woods is not being named.

Woods was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries on January 7th.

The Cincinnati Police Department conducted the investigation into this collision. Their investigation included a response to the accident scene and interviews of witnesses. They also did a reenactment of the accident. The reenactment involved shutting down Colerain Avenue at the same time of night as the accident, having the fire department spray water on the street to imitate the rainy conditions at the time of the incident, as well as the placement of vehicles with flashing lights that were at the scene on January 4th when Officer Woods was struck.

Prosecutor Deters commented, “After a review of the thorough investigation by the Cincinnati Police Department Traffic Section and a reenactment of the scene, no charges will be filed in this case. This incident was a terrible tragedy but not a criminal act.

My sympathy goes out to the family of Officer Woods and to our entire community for the loss of a dedicated and beloved public servant.
