Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announces the Indictment in Walmart Homicide

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph T. Deters announced the indictment of Josiah Hassell for the November 2021 murder of Jamonte Brown outside of the Walmart on Ferguson Road.

Hassell (DOB 11/29/95) was indicted on one count of Aggravated Murder (SF), two counts of Murder (SF), and two counts of Felonious Assault (F2). If convicted on all charges, Hassell faces the maximum possible sentence of life in prison.

On November 27, 2021, the victim, Jamonte Brown, exited through the front door of the Ferguson Road Walmart in District 3. Brown was waiting for a ride outside of the store when Hassell pulled up in a vehicle behind him. Hassell exited the vehicle, pulled a firearm, and shot Brown in the back of the head. Hassell then returned to the vehicle and sped off.

Brown succumbed to his injuries on-scene.

Hassell’s whereabouts are currently unknown. Anyone with information about Hassell is asked to contact Cincinnati Police Department, Homicide Unit at 513-352-3542.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters commented, “This man was executed, in broad daylight, in a crowded parking lot. In all my years as a prosecutor, it is hard to think of another case as brazen as this.

The type of person who can casually walk up behind an unsuspecting victim and put a bullet in their head is someone who should never be on the streets again.

The criminal lobby continues to excuse and minimize horrifying violence. And as a result, violent criminals feel empowered to behave this way. We cannot allow this to continue,”
