The defendant and his wife, the victim of this offense, were having marital problems, and, on November 1, 1986, defendant became upset with his wife, held her down on their bed, poured alcohol on her body and set her on fire. The victim, while on fire, fled from the family apartment to a neighbor's apartment, where the police were called. When the police responded, paramedics were working on the victim, who had skin hanging off her arms and chest areas, as well as parts of her back and face. The victim was transported to University Hospital where she remained until December 11, 1986, at which time she was pronounced dead. The cause of death was due to second and third degree burns to 47 percent of her body.
