Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers announces the indictment of Brandon Claiborne

Today, Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers announced the indictment of Brandon Claiborne for the July 23, 2023 attack on Cincinnati Police Officer Terry McGuffey.

Claiborne (DOB 3/10/89) was indicted for one count of Attempt Murder (F1), two counts of Aggravated Robbery (F1), and two counts of Felonious Assault (F1). If convicted, he faces a maximum possible sentence of 22-27.5 years in prison.

On July 23, 2023, Cincinnati Police received a report of a suspicious person at Sawyer Point. Officer Terry McGuffey responded to the scene and located an individual, later identified as Brandon Claiborne, matching the suspect’s description. Officer McGuffey engaged in a brief conversation with Claiborne before Claiborne struck McGuffey in the face and wrestled him to the ground.

Claiborne gained control of McGuffey’s taser and baton and used them to repeatedly strike McGuffey. Claiborne attempted to gouge the officer’s eyes with his thumbs.

Upon the arrival of another police officer, Claiborne was taken into custody without further incident.

Officer McGuffey suffered serious physical harm at the hand of Brandon Claiborne.

The investigation determined Claiborne wanted to kill a white police officer.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers commented, “This vicious attack was nothing short of attempted murder of a police officer. Situations like this are the direct result of a growing anti-police movement that is dehumanizing law enforcement.

It is a miracle Terry McGuffey survived and our thoughts are with him and his family. Enough is enough. We will do everything within the law to put this guy behind bars for as long as we can.”
